In fact, the number of income tax returns filed in the country between April-June 2023 almost doubled to cross 1.36 crore on an annual basis. The last date for filing income tax return was 31 July 2023. For companies and individuals who are required to get their accounts audited, the last date for filing income tax returns for income earned in the financial year 2022-23 is October 31.
And in July, more than 5.41 crore returns were filed. According to the Income Tax Department, a record 6.77 crore income tax returns were filed till July 31 for the assessment year 2023-24. In this, 53.67 lakh people filed income tax returns for the first time. As per the comparative data available on the online ITR filing platform, over 70.34 lakh income tax returns were filed in April-June 2022-23. In April-June 2023-24, this number increased by 93.76 percent to more than 1.36 crore.
According to statistics, this time one crore ITRs were filed till June 26, while last year one crore income tax returns were filed till July 8. On the other hand, those who have not yet filed income tax return, they can file income tax return by 31 December 2023. However, for this people will have to pay late fees, only then they will be able to file ITR.
